Hey Everyone,
So it has taken me a long time to work up the courage to show you guys my tank. It has been a long work in progress and I never feel totally pleased with it. Oh well, I guess that is part of this hobby.
Here are some shots I took tonight, my GSP (Green Star Polyp) wasn't out tonight because a bunch of stuff changed in the tank so it's shy right now. But I purchased some nice corals from Bayside so decided I would show everyone.
I'll come up with a list of whats in there soon..I promise :P

looks decent to me. just because you have a smaller tank doesnt mean its any less worthy thanany other tank. sometimes the small tanks are the amasing setups.. welcome to the nano world

Don't get yourself too worked up I haven't taken a picture of my tank in months due to GHA lol. And until I get every last speck of it I probably won't :)

Thanks! The lighting is an aquaticlife four T5HO fixture with 3 blues and one Fiji...still trying to nail down the combo that I like...

I didn't want it to be on just flat on the sand so I gave it a rock but then isolated that rock from the rest of the rocks..and I just keep trimming it back..I still want to make it much smaller though..and hopefully get a nice round shape like what Bayside had...
PS..does anyone know how to make my GSP have shorter polyps? they are a quite a bit longer than what Colby had at Bayside..

I was just warning you, that's what i did, keep them on a rock on the bottom.Sometimes the more flow you give them, they can get longer.I've spread some of my pink GPS in years passed to some people...still have a few patches on the overflow.

I got ya, thanks for the advice!
Alright, I'm doing some moving around tonight..any suggestions? I have a big empty space behind the rock thats behind the GSP..thinking of putting that on it's side and moving it back so that I have more room in the front..thoughts?

Hey everyone!
So I finally picked up my new tank from Colby at Bayside Corals and it's looking amazing! It's a 24x24x10 and can't wait to set it up!
I am going to be putting a 150w MH lighting over it..we'll see if it's too powerful for how shallow the tank is. My brother is a carpentry genius so I'll get him to build me a stand right away.
I'll hopefully get you guys pictures of the tank tomorrow.
It's only 10" deep? What kind of corals do you plan to keep in it? Ushio puts out a 70 watt 14,000K DE bulb that looks nice. If you can find a 70 watt Aromat ballast they are one of the best in that wattage.

Ya, I was going to say, 150w for 10"? How high off the water are you planning?

Hey,
I also was thinking 150w might be a little high but this guy from nano reef did a 24x24x9 and that is who I am copying so to say..he is using a 24" Giesemann fixture with a 150w MH and 4x24w T5. Here is his thread on nano-reef.com.
http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=253991
Thoughts? How high should I hang the fixture?
First things first, what corals do you plan to keep?
That thread is like 170+ pages long! Ha! It looks like he started with a Tek(?) 4x24 T5 fixture hung about 16" above the tank. Have you seen a pic in there that shows the Giesemann fixture? I'm wondering how high it is. I haven't come across any info on the Giesemann fixture. He mentions switching to all LED and wasn't satisfied with them. His latest fixture new in February is an ATI 6-bulb T5 fixture with ATI bulbs and a strip of Reefbrite blue LEDs running along each side of the ATI (check pg 160, scroll down for a pic of how the fixtures are hung). This is also a tonne of light, but it is better distributed with several T5s rather than one halide. DE halides are particularly spotlight-ish.
One thing to consider, if your tank is in your living room as many are or somewhere that you will be sitting to view the tank, hanging the lights up real high will allow the lights to shine in your eyes when you are sitting. One of the reasons many people use canopies. So, if you're planning to hang the fixture keep that in mind, and maybe you will need to make some modifications for your application.
I would suggest you send a PM to that "Rehype" guy and ask him why he changed away from the halide fixture and how high he hung the halide (unless you can find a pic...I went through about 20 pages and didn't find a pic). He does mention better light distribution from the T5s so maybe he was having issues with a spotlight effect from the DE halide.

I am planning on keeping SPS corals.
I know, that thread is huge! lol. I read from a post that he made that he switched to t5's because he really wanted the opportunity to fine tune the colouring. He liked having the ability to have a bunch of different combinations of bulbs. He also did notice better light distribution.
That is an excellent point that you bring up about having the tank in a room where people sit. I will be having the fish tank in my office in the basement. So I will be sitting down. How high do you think I would need to hang this fixture?
Tyler
A 150 watt halide fixture? I'm thinking 16-18". You might have to build a shield of some sort to keep it from shining in your eyes. If you're handy with sheet metal you could probably rivet a plate to it like a visor and paint it to match.
