I came home today and was feeding the tank and noticed the clam shell had been pulled open??? The bottom of the clam looks like it has been ate from the side that was wide open. What would do such a thing. I recently purchased a piece of live rock, what kind of hitch hikers should I be looking for? Here are pics of what it looks like now (taken from Sony Xperia Play)

What do you have for livestock?
Nothing ate it, your clam is dying. I would take it out of the tank at this point. If it is dead it won't be attached very strongly anymore. Sniff it, if it stinks toss it. If not, leave it for a few days and sniff it again.

I have a tomato clown a neon velvet damsel a 3 strip damsel and what i was told a dwarf lion fish but it appears to of not been a dwarf, hence the tank upgrade so soon. I also have a various amount of hermit crabs (halloween red scarlet and blue) a halloween urchin, a conch snail alot of astrea and turbos and a load of sand dwelling snails. I smelt the clam no stink yet, and very responsive to any movement in the tank. I also have a lot of berghai nudibranches. I fed some marine snow and got a response in movement from the clam.

I guess i should of cooked the rock for a while but it was only out of water for 15 seconds out of their tank and another 15 out of water into mine. Must of leeched some stuff into water. Live n learn but nothing else seems affected (even tho i only have aptasia and fuzzy mushrooms and some zoas)
It's still moving?! From the second pic it looks like it isn't even attached to the shell anymore. Hmm...the pics must be deceiving. Put a basket over the clam...like for strawberries or for pond plants. That will protect it if it is indeed being chewed on. I don't think the rock had anything to do with it unless it had a big nasty crab in it. In which case the basket will protect the clam. After lights out look at the tank with a flashlight and see if you see anything near the clam.

Thanks Myka, ya im as surprised as you that it still moves. I will get the wife to put a cover on it (even if she has to eat all the strawberries and rinse it darn good first) It is attached at the back of the clam and looks normal at the back I cant move the clam to get a good pic as my cell is not waterproof...yet (Sony will do it :D)
