I ordered those pretty blue zoanthids from Colby last week. I was super impressed with how many polyps there were on the rock. Then something strange happened. I found a few loose polyps floating around the tank. So I collected them and stuck them in a little crack in the rock. I later caught a sexy "playing" with the loose polyps. The next morning they were no where to be found. I caught the sexy shrimp on the actually frag EATING my polyps. Every night after that two or three went missing!! BUGGERS! They are suppose to be totally reef safe!
I did some reading and MANY people with pico/nano invertebrate tanks have this problem. It's hard to find a good balance with how much food you can actually put into the tank, because of the small water volume.
I moved my remaining polyps, both loose and still on the rock to the overflow at the back of my spec for now. I am ordering a mangrove to help me feel better about putting extra food in the tank. I am going to start offering the sexy shrimp a larger variety of foods to find out what will satisfy them. I also ordered a larger polyp zoanthid to see if they will eat that or not. My hope is that they are eating them because they are easy to pluck off the rock, and that they are not satisfied with their current diet.
I wanted to share my story in case anyone is thinking of adding them to a nano invertebrate tank, and wants Zoas. As far as I can tell they leave mushrooms, leathers, and ricordeas alone.
