Does anything eat this? what causes this? here is a web link with a picture of a growth on the glass http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/algaephotosclassificati/ig/Coralline-Algae-Photo-Gallery/Pink-Purple-Coralline-Algae.htm
Itd be great to get something that'll eat it. I was told star fish, help prevent this growth but was told they do not eat algae.

Most urchins eat coralline algae as well as other algae, but they have a big appetite and probably won't do well in your 30 gallon tank. I also find they spend more time on the rocks than the glass. Coralline is expected in a healthy reef, there isn't really a "cause" other than the tank is maturing. It is pretty much a given, and makes a good competitor to nuisance algae.

I agree with myka. Purple is much better than green.

I've had one in my 30 gal for over two years and it's doing very well. I wouldn't have more than one in a small tank. My urchin spends most it's time on the glass.

Depends how clean your tank is. There very well could be lots of food for an urchin in a 30 gallon tank, but in pristine conditions that wouldn't be possible.
