What do you guys have to protect from power outtages? how many times a year do you think it goes out in your house? Mine like 3-7. My problem was the aquaclear was siphoned out of water so it ran with little water. Now i have a penguin Bio-wheel wonder if the same thing will happen?

Put all your powered equipment on a single power bar and then shut it all down for a minute or two to see what will happen in the event of a power outage. You may then determine if all filters will start on their own.

I have used many aqua clears, you will have 1 out of 10 that will not start back up, I know if you take a q-tip and dip some vasoline and rub a little on the motor shaft under the magnet. The motor will quiet for sure and also helps in the restart of the filter. Good luck.

After a couple of extended power outages this past year that have made me a bit paranoid, I've invested in a UPS that will run the tank and equipment and four computers plus printer for an hour. This way the fish won't get cold and my children will still have something to do!

I would be interested in what model of UPS that can run all of that for an hour. It sounds like the kind I need. Is it a SMART UPS? I was told that these are the ones that simulate Sinewaves which pumps etc. need. The normal UPS'S aren't apparently and will burn out pumps and motor driven equipment fairly quickly. I am currenly trying to "blackout" proof my system and am contemplating a couple of deepcycle marine batteries and a power inverter.

Mine is a Liebert Powersure PSI - I will check it against your comments - thanks for the heads up - the distributor I got it through, Electronic Environments of Regina, is quite reliable, so I'm sure they've considered the pumps and so forth, but I will review to be sure. The system is priced over a couple of thousand, so it's not inexpensive. I'm sure Electronic Environments would have options for those who just want to back up the power to their saltwater set-ups and not to a bunch of computer equipment.

My aquarium has been without power for about 6 hrs. the water temp. only dropped 1 deg. and every thing else was o.k. This was in the winter. This was also an unusally long outage. I myself would'nt waste the money on a couple hrs. backup power. If we get a major outage your going to need a generator anyways. A few hrs. of power in a backup system is'nt going to help, and the power going off for a few hrs. is'nt going to hurt anything.

Get some battery powered air pumps they will work for a long time, or as stated earlier... I actually use a marine deep cycle battery and an power inverter!Last time i needed it it lasted 2 1/2 hours with no signs of quiting!Alothough i really only needed it cause it was a 230Gallon tank that was heavily stocked,i wouldnt even bother on my little tanks!
