I just got back from Thailand. I was there almost all summer, its beautiful there. Went with friends for a holiday. Really cheap once you get over there. Lots of stories, but since this is the Saltwater website, not the drinking wild parties site, I will talk about the ocean there. I was in the water almost every day with my snorkel and mask. The first place was a island off the eastern coast. We stayed in this large bay and it only had one large rock in the middle totally submerged but only twelve feet by four feet. So while everyone was throwing Frisbees and topless European girls were frolicking in the waves, I was snorkelling around this rock. I counted nine different species that I could see. I’m not totally sure on all them but. Scooter blennies , tons of these guys right inside old barnacles. One copper band or something very similar. School of damsels, yellow and black. Green wrasses. One unidentifiable black fish. He just sat in a shallow pit in the sand on the bottom. My most exciting find was a rock or stone fish. Very lucky to spot this guy, just sitting . I even placed my hand close to him and it didn’t move. All this on a small rock with nothing around it. I guess that’s why they were there all the time. I would visit them every day for a week.

We went on four separate snorkel trips to different areas. The first place was about 8 feet deep maybe. Many stony corals and a few very colourful clams. Most of the clams were all the same size, not getting bigger than 20inches. Another place had brighter colour stonies . Also anemones some with pink clowns and some with perculas in them. Large groupers under overhanging montiporas. Tons of species of fish here. Another site had few corals but tons of fish. We would throw bread and crackers into the water at friends from the boat. The fish would swarm the snorkeling people and scare the of them. Seen a small barracuda and a two foot black tip shark. Many specimens that I would love to take home.

The bad things I noticed were dead spots were you could see where the anchor was dropped. I found a lighter of all things at everyone of my four spots. The odd bottle or fishing net. My boat driver would stand on the coral to get air from the surface. I told him that he is wrecking it but he didn’t think it was a big deal. You can tell they use the same site over and over again. But when the people are poor and tourists have money. It was still the best time ever, I hope to go back to Thailand , this time with a Scuba diving license.
