A week ago I went to do my morning check of the tanks and noticed the 180 was murky...switched on the tanks..and saw my 10 inch squamosa clam spawning......spewing tons of stuff!I didn't know whether to panic or just watch...I Googled and found this article:

This spurred me to action. The clam was still spewing after a half hour...I had nothing in my 25 gal quarantine so put it in there where it continued for at least another half hour....white silty stuff.
The 180 was so milky I could barely see my 7 inch trigger.I changed filter pads, added a couple of poly filters, added 2 bags of carbon, turned on my back up air pumps, and got ready to change water(had 20 gals ready to go).
After an hour or so the tank started to clear up,and the skimmer was working overtime(still is).THere was no ammonia spike and I did another water change yesterday. All week the filter pads have been filthy! So far the livestock is fine.
As for the clam,I siphoned out the silt ,cleaned filters frequently(had two aquaclear powerfilters, added more carbon and poly filter, changed water 2x/day..the water was clearing but ammonia was going up. The clam stopped reacting in two days and the the house started to reek. What to do with the remains?I would have liked to keep the shell but there was just too much meat in the clam to clean ,plus the smell was making me wretch.I put it in the freezer to wait for garbage day.Even in the freezer...wrapped in 3 heavy duty garbage bags...it was still very smelly.
I am sad to lose this clam.It was beautiful...had a little shrimp living in it...don't know what happened to it..I am so fortunate I was at home. I think after a day I would have lost the tank.
I will not get another large clam. Toooooo dangerous!Another plus if you can call it that, is my brains are happy that they have more room to expand...but I miss the clam.:sadday:
