So I have been noticing over the last week or two a red algae on my sand. It looks like cyano only not as thick & gooey looking. The weird thing is by late afternoon it starts to fade and by early evening it is completely gone then the next day it starts all over... weird. All parameters are great. RODI used. Nitrates/Phosphates 0. Fuge full of cheato. I'm stumped. I think it is my DSB leaching. I have been having probs since my Pwrhd let go and blew up my Sndbd. I plan to rip it out and go with a thin layer of coarser sand but in the mean time I would like to know if anyone has experienced this.

Do you do a water change every week? Sometimes if water is not change every week red algae will appear I learned that the hard way  .

I have the same problem in my reef tank. It is the only tank of 4 that has the suger sand , the others have crushed coral. The stuff comes builds up and then disappears in the evening. Also have it in a gold color. No luck in getting rid of it yet. I don't think I would use sand as a substrate ever again. Way more headachs than crushed coral.

Buy a UV! My tank was absolutley filthy. I did many many water changes all the time. I bought the UV and no more cyano ever! Gone in about 3 days!

Oh thank god someone else has this problem!!!! I also got fustrated over this and even when i did a water change it just seemed to encourage this growth. I used chemi-clean then a water change and it did help though but not completely gone. I have a UV but haven't gone that route yet because the chemi-clean did seem to help. Will re-dose and see if it continues to improve to 100 % clear.
