Saskreef seems pretty dead lately, so i got a topic to discuss

The Moose Jaw Multiplex, Good or Bad for Moose Jaw? what is your guys opinion on this mulit million dollor project?

If you talk to people in Moose Jaw about the Multiplex you will get vary positive and vary nagative answers. If you have ever been in the civc center we obviously need a new home for the warriors. This multiplex is a 61 million dollor project with about 35 thousand people living in Moose Jaw alot of people are wondering if we can aford this. This bulding is going down town it will requaur 12 hundred parking spots, but they are are only going to have 200. You can barly find a parking spot on a normal day, And this bulding will have a hockey rink and curling rink. We are all ready geting more projects in the same area. That spa is adding on, and bulding a bigger casino. and thats a 40 million dollor project. and there is another developer thats going to rebuild river street from main to 1st ave. to the way it looked in the old days with tunnels and skywalks going across the street, we are hearing thats in the millions as well. and all theses projects are to start next spring.

North Battleford has the same deal going aside from the spa portion I believe. They also have a large portion of funding coming from the Casino/SIGA (not entirely sure on which association it is coming from) that would require a large pow wow ring to be built in the centre. I think it is beneficial if these places are built in large multi-purpose centres since you can kill two birds with one stone and it could lessen driving times. On the other hand it takes 4 small arenas placed throughout a community out of circulation and replaces it with a larger, and hopefully, central location. This requires some to drive further than they would have had to before.

I think it's good for a community to pull together and raise money for projects such as these and there will always be someone on both sides of the argument, all that matters is in the end is it well planned out and truly affordable for the community?

They had talked about building the downtown casino in Saskatoon for a while, and it even came down to votes. In the end it was moved out to a reserve and parking is still bad in downtown stoon haahaa!

the biggest problem with building it downtown is as you mentioned the parking problems. the other thing is the they could cut total costs in the range of several million building it on either the existing location or on the 9th and thatcher locations that were also proposed.

In my opinion the multiplex is to big of a project (area and parking) to build downtown, Moose Jaw is small enough that even on a bad day you can get from one end of the city to the other in under 15 minutes.

I'm from S'toon so I only just heard of this. It sounds like a good thing but when you look at the logistics of it (millions and millions of dollars, cutting down terribly on parking), I think it'll be a downfall. JMO.

I dunno...

I lived in Winnipeg when they redid the entire downtown to 'improve' it...and we all watched as improvement caused the decline and fall of what was a wholesome bustling downtown...

There just wasn't the population to keep it going...AND (you guessed it) - no enough convenient parking to draw people...the crowds all headed to the free parking of the urban malls...

I'm in Moose Jaw fairly frequently. It's a beautiful little city. But you know what my main observation is? That it's dead. I never see any action in the evenings...it's like a ghost town...frankly, I find it eerie.

I don't know that a large development with such a small population...and then NO parking for out-of-town visitors is going to fly.

I think they should put a big bubble over all of Moose Jaw - then everyone would travel in the wintertime to 'The Warm, Friendly City'. And you could turn the Natatorium into a giant salt pool with underwater viewing windows. And we all know what would go in the pool ... the greatest display of saltwater fish and corals in Canada. The Tunnels of Moose Jaw? Phooey. The Oceans of Moose Jaw would attract much more attention under that one great big bubble. And I'm serious.

You know what,I haved lived in Moose Jaw all my life (over 50 years).I watched as they sank the Canucks,a farm team to Chicago Blackhawks, back in the 70"s which was agreat team,Chelios was a main player. Then the boys with big ideas and lots of money(not that donated any of their own)figured we needed a teir 2 team(WHL)again. So they bought or got the Warriors from Winnipeg.I went to the games in the mid and late 80"s but geuss what? The town of Moose Jaw could not and would not pay for the premium players.Look at Petr Nedved who was a pick and property of the Warriors. He wound up going to Seattle or Tacoma because the team would not or could not pay.Another NHL player we could of had.I think the city can not and ultimately will not support a WHL team regardless of the crap you here from the boys with the cash in town.I personally have not seen any of these clowns at a game and probably will never see them there. This team will always be "second fiddle" in the league. If you look at Moose Jaw,a great place to live,we have no industrys, except for a couple of trailer manufactures which do not add up to squat for support. This is and always will be a retirement centre(over 65% of the population is over 55 years old. Also,if the team came upon hard times and was losing(a regular occurence because of money)the old civic centre was less than a sellout.Personally,I think we have the Warriors for now but the message is in the wind. Some of the big bucks wanted a new arena but not for the Warriors. They will be lucky to last another ten years here.My opinion only....Besides,who needs another tax hike now????

the boys with the cash in town

Precicely why I asked " where is the $ coming from.

Take away federal, provincial and civic $ and see if "the boys with the cash" will still be in town......easy to spend someone elses money. They peel the cream and vanish..

Its only a game...If people can raise the $ from supporters and fans build on. If not, it tells you something about the project.

The reason this new rink is being built is not because the city or the people necessarily wanted to do it NOW and now being a key word, the rink issue was forced into action because the WHL gave them an altimadum and said either upgrade your existing rink build a new one or you loose your team. This was brought up I think 2 years ago and a decision had to be made now to keep the team.
Moose Jaw wasn't the only city that had this issue Swift Current (who has fans like Moose Jaw if the team doesn't do well and even if they are doing well don't sellout) had to upgrade there rink and add more seats, so they did it and also added curling ice.
