Thought I'd fill some of you in on my new build.
My previous sump setup was quiet open, it served it's purpose at the time but since recent changes in equipment and the desire for something smaller and more efficient, I decided to start from scratch, well almost.
Previous setup:

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a174/sphelps/AUG07fragtank2.jpg
Current Problems:
No longer use zeovit reactor
Frag tank was too large, additional pumps where needed to provide flow
Cooled by fan, created humidity then humidity reduced by dehumidifier (dumb)
Pump and water noise in room
Majority of sump volume not used
So the solution I came up with is a single sealed cabinet that will contain everything in more space efficient fashion.
Some drawings
not all features and components are shown, just enough to design a mach up.

New Features Include:
All sump spaced used
frag tank moved into sump and uses full return flow (no extra pumps)
Refugium moved up top and fed by small powerhead (low flow requirement, unlike frag tank)
Fits all equipment in 30 cubic feet, less than 1/3 previous
Evaporative cooler, will efficicently provide cooling using only a few small fans for power.
Cooler output will be vented outdoors

Stress analysis in cabinet:
Doubled the maximum possible load to include a safety factor, results as shown.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k36/EngineeredAquariums/Displacement.jpg
Maximum displacement less than 0.4mm
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k36/EngineeredAquariums/Stress.jpg
Nothing crazy here, no concentrations, minimal values. Obviously but it's easy to check. Safety first!
More pictures to come, more work has been done. :xyxthumbs

You can see the extra space made for some nice shelving for books, oh so many books...

Still lots left to do, still need to build the evaporative cooler and refugium. I'm waiting on some extension cables so I can install the controller in it's final position. A few things changed during manufacturing and installation than originally planed.
This was pretty nasty

So no more frag tank? It looked like you had one in your first drawing... Or is it going on top of that cabinet? Looks good though.

Very nice...I see all the schooling has paid off...
BTW...if you're ever interested in building me some funky bookshelves let me know...
I have WAAAAAAY more books than you do...WAAAAAY more... :)

Good job man!
Thanks Scott, it's mostly just setup with the bare essentials for now, I will be cleaning everything up and installing the remaining stuff in the next few weeks.

Yeah there is a frag tank, it's between the two black sheets on acrylic in the sump. It's smaller but big enough for my needs plus it takes advantage of the full flow from the return pump. I installed the black acrylic to keep the light out of the rest of the setup. Hopefully avoid algae growth in the rest of the sump and calcium reactor.
The top tank will be the refugium, not yet installed.

Yeah after looking at the picture I realized I don't have that many, it just seemed like a lot at the time. Most of my design and stress analysis experience wasn't acquired from school, taught myself for the most part.

All that is missing is a little water wheel to start generating some power lol. Looks sweet!

Built the evaporative cooler today, the exhaust will be plumbed into a PVC duct and sent outdoors.

Looking good Steve. Where abouts in your system does that cooler go and how exactly will it be plumbed in?

The cooler is shown in the schematic to the left of the calcium reactor and to the right of the CO2 bottle. The water from the skimmer tank drain will feed into the top of the cooler and then drain back down into the sump.

Email or PM me when you're ready, I can build anything you want. It can be connected in many ways, the idea is that you trickle water through it from the top and drain it from the bottom. Air is then forced through the trickling chamber resulting in maximum surface area contact between the water and air causing maximum evaporation. It is however important that if the cooler is contained in a cabinet or stand it's exhaust is vented out, the dryer and warmer the air going in the more effective the cooler will work.

A little more work done last few days.
Evaporative cooler is installed, just need to finish the vent plumbing. Maintains temperature within 0.2 degrees of set point (80) compared to 2 degrees with a sump fan and 4 degrees with no cooling.

Door and top installed, frag tank lights installed.

Looks very clean. Any way to pull out the frag tank or anything for easier access or is it accessed easily enough?

The lights slide out and are easily removed, after that the frag tank has good access.

Its close man, I got my elctrician to come and wire my fishroom, extend the power cords for the ballasts and redo the electrical panel in my house. drain and return lines are ran I just need to find a way to make them aethetically pleasing. My sump and refuge/growout tanks are in place and i started to fill them with water. I need to hook up my main pump and connect the drain/return/sump lines and install a couple teleposts. Also need to install a sink and a countertop. Maybe a couple hours worth of work then its good to go. The only thing i am thinking is that I dont need as big a return pump because my fish room is almost directly under the tank, But i guess we'll see what happens
