Hi, I have a yellow Flowerpot Coral that has a gray spot on it. I don't know if something is sitting on it or if it is a dead polyp. Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks.

Could be a type of infection these corals are famous for, it'll look similar to a form of algae growth within the tissue. If this is the case enjoy your remaining time together as it will most likely eventually die.

It's very rare for these corals to live longer than a year in captivity.

These corals do not live long in captivity. Its sad they are continually brought in. The cause of death is usually starvation.

Care is very similar to the feeding needs of Dendronepthea Soft Corals, requiring several feedings of phytoplankton, copepods, juvenile mysis, rotifers, polychaete larva and other similar (tiny) sized foods every day. Baby brine shrimp are too large to feed this specimen. Attempts to do so will cause the polyps to retract and feeding will stop.
Provide high lighting AND perfect water parameters or cause this coral to die within 3 to 6 months.

Reef Roids were specifically formulated to feed these coral.

I have one the size of a softball (when closed) in my landing/frag system, been there @ 1 year and it is open all the time, definatly reacts when roids are fed.

I also have a couple customers with them with the same experience. All do direct feedings (inverted pop bottle method).

I have read that there is great success with flower pot corals at the following site

Dirrect feeding is incorporated.
