Welcome to the site Civic. The best tip I can give you is to do some research before starting. People on this site can give some tips, but reading and research yourself first.I have read some incorrect advise on some of the threads, on a open forum, you can get some bad advice. Dont get me wrong theres lots out there that do know what there doing. Civic try this link its pretty basic, but will help you.

Research research and then when you think you know all there is to know, close your eyes and dive in, and start out slowly. But don't be cheap with equipment because you will spend more money on the good equipment ounce you replace it. Another website I have found very informative is http://www.wetwebmedia.com/. and please feel free to contact me.

yeah dont cheap out on equipment. You dont have to break the bank and get every bell and whistle. But for example, if your tank will require a
1000 GPH pump, then get the 1000 GPH pump first time around, dont cheap out and think you can get bye with the cheaper 750 GPH pump. Because in the end you will end up buying the 1000 GPH pump you should have gotten in the first place, and the 750 GPH will be collecting dust.
This goes for all equipment, ie protein skimmer, lights, heaters,
if you find you require a certain piece of equipment then just get the correct size one first time around, it WILL save you bucks in the long run.

To be honest with you, if you haven't taken care of fish before at all, I'd start out with freshwater.
