Hey, I am running a canister filter on my 55 gallon right now, I want to upgrade to a sump instead. Is there a possible way to have a sump without drilling the back of my tank. Thing is, I just dont' wanna empty out my tank.
So, if anyone could explain to me what my options are.
Hopefully it won't be too expensive.
Thanks for any help!

I too am research this. Can't explain how but yes it's very possible. It's called a HOB Overflow.

Yes you can use what's called a hang on or siphon external overflow. They simply use two boxes, one on the inside or the tank the other on the outside, they then use a siphon tube to transfer water from one box to the other. You can purchase then from most major aquarium suppliers, such as JL aquatics (http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/store_pages/tlist/overflows/overflows.php?category_ID=89). I also custom build these units for around $100 depending on the flow rate required. My designs do not use the continuous siphon method, which I believe has given these devices their bad reputation as it creates a weakness, instead they just use a single or double U tube which with a matched flow rate is much more reliable.
