OK,
I've been reading up on clams and their initial palcement in the tank . One respected website says "Pick a spot and leave it !" while another says start at the bottom and slowly move up.
What do our experts think ?
Just a little confusing.

Crocea's and maxima's require alot of light so placement up high is usually best. Both of these will attach to the rock with their foot. Trying to pry them off may injure them. This is probabably why the one article said place it and leave it. If you have to move it you'll have to move the rock. Derasa's and squamosa's need less light so they can be placed in the sand.

I like the idea of placing a clam on a skinny flat piece of rock - let the clam attach to that and then you can move the clam around the tank as need be.
I had a clam under PC lighting and it did fine while situated on a flat rock on the sand - about 15" from the lighting; it did do better when I moved it to about 3" away from the lighting. In that tank, I had the actinics on for about fourteen hours and the other lights on for twelve hours a day.

ahh, that's a good idea putting it on a flat rock on the sandbed, I've been having trouble getting mine to attach to anything, so when I put him up high, he jumps off by morning..maybe I'll try the flat rock idea.

When I first got my crocea clam, I tried to put it up high on my rock (being I only have PC lights) but like John's it would always jump off. In the end I put it on a rock at the bottom of the tank. It has not moved since. It has lost some of its color over the past year but other then that is doing fine and growing.

Getting them attach to some rubble or a shell helps make them feel more stable up on the rock I think.
However, if your clam doesn't like where you put him, he'll unattach from that anyway and jump. With some of mine I just gave up and let them stay where they apparently wanted to be. The two that attached to the rock did so immediately and never moved.
