Does anybody use the refractometer for sale on J and L's website? I was wondering if it was worth investing in or if it was a piece of junk. Also what kind of a price range am I looking at for a better refractometer if this one is not acceptable and were can I get it?

Just be sure to pick one up that has ATC otherwise known as"Auto Temperature Compensation". Some of the cheaper refractometers on ebay do not have this feature so salinity measurements have to be made and then a calculation carried out to correct for the temperature of the aquarium water.

I took my time on EBAY...watching several auctions over a few months
until I got the unit I wanted (w/ATC) for the price I wanted...it can be riskier buying on there...but if you know what you want and are patient, you can eventually get it.

Sorry to post this but i hate when companies are trying to pressure us into buying from them and asking why we dont so here ill tell you why we dont. Its all compatition. I know we are supposed to and should support our local shops but its hard to when your putting corals that need MH under actinic lights and we see u disrespect animals like that. Not running skimmers over crowding non compatible fish with other fish, dead fish in tanks, selling use dead snails. Show the animal some respect and show us you care about what you are selling. Also respect us as costumers when we are posting what we have cause we have left over and dont want it to go to waste and u hijack posts its hard to see any respect....personally ill go where the costumer is respected the animal is respected where quality is given and the place can be trusted. Ill pay for way over priced stuff if all this is given to me. And thats where the competition comes from...not always prices.

Maybe you folks should focus on the topic; it seems some of you take every chance you get to trash the local retailers. First off Pat is right support your local retailer, even if it means spending a little more it's well worth it. If you don't support them they may not be around when you really need them, and every hobbyist has a time where their LPS has saved them, you may not always want to admit it but you know it's true.
Honestly I don't see why you felt the need to post something that has nothing to do with refractometers, maybe people just don't give you enough attention so you seek it here, not sure but try your best to keep things on topic.
As already stated any refractometer with ATC will be an upgrade from a hydrometer, but you always get what you pay for, which is sometimes just the satisfaction of supporting local economy.
At least keep it in Canada!

Errr...I would have said I didnt think they were available locally...atleast not until Colby opened his store....If I am going to buy from J&L, BigAls or some other outta province company...I may as well maximize my savings.
When it comes to animals...I often will buy locally...but when I can get a XP4 filter for $200 less than local retail/local box store(NIB)(for a FW tank)...I will always go that way...it gives me more $$$$ to spend on the hobby, which will be more beneficial to my charges in the future..when cost is close...local all the way
I like this one better:

Finer divisions (maybe not..slightly different layout I guess...more like I am used to seeing)

I didnt mean to get off topic. Pat asked why we dont so i said why we dont. And like i said in my post i will spend the extra dollar if i see the respect and care someone like colby puts into his store unforunitetly colby did not have what i needed when i needed it but no doubt if he had it i would have bought from him in a second.

I didn't mean to start a fight I was just looking for some input as to what I should look for and where, as well as what price range I should expect. I now know of several, some what local places to buy from and their prices. If anyone else has a price they want to shoot my way i'd love to know. I just wanted to know what my options were. I will gladly buy locally if you have what I want. I wanted to have some idea of costs and where to buy stuff when I do get to that point.

Hey Tyfly there was no intention of any fighting on my behalf of the post I mentioned about the 2 prices I quoted you on the equipment you were looking for. As for IZZIES comments, well i am not sure what he is trying to do or say, but please be sure to tell him that all are corals are in our coral tank that runs 2 250 watt metal halides and a 96 watt blue acatinic lamp.( maybe better lighting then his??)

I run a T5 system with individual reflectors and fans for ballasts, had 2 halides and moved up due to heat issues and due to the performance of T5s over SPS tanks. Last time i was in there there was a dying acro under an atinic. No halides. I guess some improvments are being made. Glad to see that.
