We live on an acerage. Our well water is potable...but has issues...one being the high tannin levels...
The fish are likely fine with the tannins...but I don't like the yellow water!
...I've noticed that chlorine precipitates the tannins out of the water (when I clean toilets... )...
...sooooo...I was wondering if it would be feasible to chorinate our water (before I use it in the tank)...let the chlorine dissapate over 24-36 hours...and then use it for my freshwater tank(s)...
...it would be a lot easier to set up a larger tank if I didn't have to haul water in from the city...

Hhmm...now I'm confused about chloramines...if I add chlorine to my well water...and it binds with my OM...does that make chloramines???:worried:

Prime removes Clorine,Chloramine, and Ammonia. 250ml. treats 2500 gallons. $10.00 at cowtown. Filtering the water with carbon should help to remove the yellow. Not sure if the tannis would harm marines but it probably would change the P.H.

The Prime should do the job after you treat it, but make sure it is well aggetated (airstone or powerhead) for about a day before adding it to your tank.
Also it may be easier to look into an RO/DI unit for 4 or 5 hundred dollars that would be good for your tank and your own potable water source.

Thanks for the suggestions!
You know...we do have an R/O system in place...but it's expensive to run and takes forever to produce significant amounts of water...which is why I haul water from the city...
So we only use the R/O water for drinking (straight up or boiled, as for coffee and tea) to min. expense...
I'll have to keep thinking...and planning...and thinking...:spin01:

Tannins are dissolved organics and most commonly removed with water softeners. Unfortunately, they will run you aware from $800 - $1000 or upwards. You said that your water had other issues. Would a water softener help them too? Would it be more convenient and economical than hauling water from the city?

We have a water softener...it doesn't quite manage to get rid of everything 'icky' in our water...
LOL...it's just one of those acerage things...
