Hi all,
Well, I am very happy to have stumped across this site, it's very easy to get lost in the crowd at ReefCentral. My wife and I (soon to be skewch) are in the process of setting up our tank right now, patiently waiting for the first cycle to complete so we can add some life to the tank. We're from Saskatoon.
Nice to meet you all!

Yes, welcome Crumm. I, too, am waiting for a tank to cycle - probably one or two days away ... finally!

Rentaltux, I'm Crumm's wife. Nice to see someone else from here. Where have you purchased corals etc. here in town? We haven't bought any yet, just LR from Petland (they have it stored in the back!!). We're just starting out so we've got lots to buy :)

Thanks all, we are happy to be here :)
We've got a 72G Oceanic bowfront tank (special at Petland, if anyone is in the market for a new tank, Petland in Saskatoon has a heck of a deal on some of their display models, 50% off).
Right now, we're just using a Fluval 404 (empty canister) for water flow, ordered some MaxiJet 1200's which are due in from J & L early this week. Skimmer - Remora Aqua HOB, waiting for a MaxiJet 1200 which J & L forgot to ship. Lighting - Coralife Aqualight Pro (2 x 65w 10K, 2 x 65w actinic, 4 lunar lights).
As for rock, we've got about 50lbs of live rock from Petland here in Saskatoon. The cycle appears to be on the tail end; levels are all good, and the brown diatomic algae has made an appearance. I blew off the rock with a turkey baster earlier this evening to see if I could stir up any dead tissue that could cause a spike; if all stays good, we're thinking of adding 1 or 2 shrimp or crabs.
I just went to take a picture, but my camera informed me that the battery was low :( It's in the charger right now, so pictures are forthcoming!

Welcome to the site Crumm & Skewch. Great to see some more wive's envolved. If you are going to add to your tank it should be snails or crabs. Shrimp are alot more touchy to new or not quiet cycled water. Cheaper to lose a few snails or crabs than a shrimp, and the shrimp dose'nt help with problem algea which may develop yet. Again, great to have you on board.

Thanks for the info Gary, I know patience is a must with SW; it's a daily battle.
Any recommendations on snails?
As for crabs, are blue legged hermits are fairly safe? From what I've read, hermit crabs are generally not the best to have, but the blue ones seem to be less predatorial. I am thinking just a few for comedic relief, and to give the kids something to watch for the next few weeks.

Blue legged and scarlet hermits are the least aggresive, but that not to say that they would't kill some snails for their shells or food. I like having the snails because they will eat hair algea and pick clean a dead fish before it can pollute the tank. But you will have to live with a few snails missing now and then. Astrea's and Turbo's are good glass and rock cleaners. Nassarius's and cerith's are good substrate cleaners. Margarita's seem to be a favorite of the snails because they fall off and can't get back up. Bummlebee's are more for looks as they don't consume algae. Some pet stores have been selling Nerites, most of these snails are intertidal and need to come out of the water now and then. Fighting Conchs are also good for algea and detritus but need soft substrate to burrow.

Scary Gary pretty much summed it up...... I must add that I'm not really a big fan of hermits as they seem to just kill my snails and steal their shells, and they don't really eat much algea just left over fish food. I don not have any hermits in my 230 gallon tank and don't think that I will ever need them.

In agreeance to colby, snails and crabs didn't mix well for me. I bought a custodian package from J&L a while ago that consisted of 30 crabs and 20 snails, and I've got abuot 3 snails left as the crabs dominate..it wasn't fun watching all my snails die :(

I have been buying all my fish & corals form "Cableguy" he is starting an online coral store. Excellent corals & fish and prices are ALOT better than pet stores. PM him and I bet he will let you see his stuff. You won't find better stuff IMO.

Yes, Cableguy sure does come highly recommended :) There sure aren't any good places to buy SW fish and Corals in Saskatoon; pretty much the only choice is Petland, and they aren't that great.
My wife sent Cableguy a PM, I'd be really excited to see an actual tank up, all we've seen in person is the setups in the pet stores, and they are nothing compared to some of the pics we've seen.

Rentaltux,
Someone mentioned his business name in another thread so I decided to check it out. The only thing that came up was from the SK Gazette, showing a new business license and gave the address. Low and behold, the address shown is literally 2 mins down the street from us. So if you live minutes from him we all live quite close to each other....who'd have thunk?
