glazier glass drill holes and insure it doesnt break.15 bucks i think. ive used them several times. Farmer john has had success using dremel bits(diamond coated).i used these bits to cut out a notch on my top. run water over as i ground it with dremel and these bits. i still would go to glazier before cutting a bulkhead hole in glass only cause it may crack on me then id be pooped. :pint:

Well, if glacier will drill holes that cheap and ensure they don't break, I wonder if I'm not better off to buy an tank that's undrilled and take it to them. Then make my own overflows. Only the bottom of all-glass tanks are tempered, right? Cause Morris said it'd be a week before I heard if the company they get them from has any drilled ones in stock. I have to r+r the bracing on it anyways so they could do that while its there too. That means I could buy the tank tomorrow then.

I've been impressed with all my business dealings with Glacier Glass - four transactions including having them do the windows in my home last year. They are good at small jobs and bigger jobs.

I have decided to get Glacier to drill an undrilled tank. The lady over the phone said 22 bucks a hole for 1 3/4". What size bulkheads do you guys (and gals)recommend I go with. I want at least one overflow and 2 returns. Running a mag 9.5 for my return pump through a sqwd.

a 9.5 will never fall through a 3/4" hole.
Using the following input parameters
Gallons per Hour = 950
Drain and Overflow sizes are calculated as
Recommended minimum drain pipe diameter = 1.27 inches
Recommended minimum linear overflow size = 14 inches

1and3/4 inch hole John. That was just a number I picked out of my head when I asked them how much to drill. I'll probably install 1and1/2 bulkheads so I probably need bigger holes anyways. I'll find out for sure from Waterboy tomorrow cause the tank is now sitting in my livingroom.
Sorry for the confuzzlement

Hello,
I am also thinking about getting a tank with a tempered bottom, that will require drilling on the side or back.
Were should I put the holes? I have been doing alot of research on this. If you get your tank drilled can you post some pictures on where they are, and tell me how it went at Glazier glass.
And what silicone you used around your bulkheads?
Thanks.
P.S. I donot have my tank yet and have never had a saltwater tank, I want to minimize the mistakes/cost the 1st time.

the bulkheads come with a rubber seal that expands when you tighten. I haven't had any leaks from mine as of yet..didn't use any silicone.
when I drill my 105 I'll drill the back glass a few inches below the waterline so I can run a durso pipe thru the glass and have smaller overflow spaces..it will look like 2 overflow boxes in the corners which is alright with me. I plan on doing 2x 1.5" bulkheads so I can get some crazy flow through there.

Invigor how did you get:
a 9.5 will never fall through a 3/4" hole.
Using the following input parameters
Gallons per Hour = 950
Drain and Overflow sizes are calculated as
Recommended minimum drain pipe diameter = 1.27 inches
Recommended minimum linear overflow size = 14 inches
can you explain this for me I am seting up a 240 and have a pump that will do around 3000gph at the head i am working with. I am wondering if there is a mathematical way to figuar out what size over flows i should use.
Thanks
