I'm just woundering what everyones opinion is on bio-wheel?

i'm designing my future sump and would like your input.i'm thinking of installing it in my diy overflow box.

Same principle as bioballs, creates too much nitrates. Only good for fresh water or aggressive tanks where high nitrates are of little concern and there isnt enough space for copious amounts of live rock for the biofiltration.

In saltwater your bio-media is your rock, hence the 1lb per gallon requirement. Adding addational bio-media that does not create low oxygen zones for denitrifying bacteria will result in higher nitrates which will result in more water changes which results in more salt needed which results in more money.

The only time bio-media is required in saltwater is when the system is short on cured live rock. Once the correct amount of cured live rock is in the aquarium all other forms of bio-media should be removed.
