What might work out good for you is if you try to get a small group order together. I know that I would possibly split a box with someone as a local reefer needs some more rock for his 90 and I planned on cycling it for him in my spare 55. That would be about 150 each for 30 or so lbs of rock and split shipping at 23 bucks each. This way it become affordable for you. Remember that this rock from JL's will be uncured and can not be placed directly into a current display tank.
Hope I have helped;
Chris

haha that's awesome, what's so bad about petcetera's rock?

I would be interested in a group order of live rock. I bought a 45g and havent set it up yet so I would have time to cure the rock. If you guys are going to buy some and would like to split the shipping even further, please email@ shandarr@hotmail.com with live rock in the subject line.

I'm interested, too. I sent you a PM earlier.

Big Al's ( just for everyone's information) in Calgary has about 1,500 pounds in stock - the Indo rock is always 10.00 per pound. The Fiji rock is down to 7.99 a pound if you buy it in larger quantities. Big Al's said they'd ship via Greyhound or by air to Regina.

Has anyone checked to see what a LFS could bring it in to Regina for? I'm thinking that if we all joined together and prepaid the order ... would an A1, Pat's Pat's or Petcetera, for example, be able to get it to us cheaper than if we group order on our own? The local stores would probably bring in extra just to have on hand for some of the other locals.

I'd coordinate a closer look at this idea in case you are interested.

In Regina, your best bet would probably be cowtown...I can't personally see anyone else do that...I still think J&L would be the best way to get it.

I don't recall ever seeing LR at Cowtown. I have purchased some LR from A1 in the past and found it to be very good. From what I have read J&L has the best price even with shipping and that the quality is top notch. You may want to check with Pat as he did mention he was going to bring some in although I think his prices will be high.

I talked to Morris at cowtown and he said he'd pretty much order in anything you wanted, it's just if he doesn't normally stock it, he said you have to come pick it up as soon at it gets there...I'm not sure what kind of markup he'd put on it...they get stuff from coast mountain..which I think only does Figi premium rock

If everyone is willing to group together and order a large amount like 100 plus lbs, I can get it thought Pats Pets , you would be looking at 6.99 per pound plus taxes. I know hes bringing in 100 lbs of Tonga and Tonga Branch in 2 weeks. I dont care where we buy it from, but I'm not a fan of Coast Mountain fish, maybe there rock would be fine. If we can support our local fish stores would be great. I have bought in group rates from our local stores for 10 years. The prices I was getting on bulk Hikari blood worms was cheap. I used to take care of bulk buying for the Regina Aquarium Soceity. Believe me the local pets stores would rather make something then nothing. I have been working with Pat for two months now trying to get a cheaper pricing out there, its not easy but I'm sure he will come around. Btw hes bringing in Corallife products and Ruby Reef in the next few weeks. I would also like to know if anyone is interested in Liquid Life Marine Plankton, Fresh Frozen Plankton from Alaska, also comes in Superba, witch is just larger. Let me know if anyone is interested in anything, by posting here or Privite Message. Thanks. Darren

I put up a deposit for 50lbs tonga branch from Pat's Pets on Friday. He said it was going to be 6.99-7.49 +GST/lb. I think I might alter my order to 30lbs tonga and 20 base as I have some repairs to do to my car also.

I would still expect a small cycle to take place, there will still be die off. I would maybe see if you can purchase the rock and have him keep it in his tank for a week so you experience minimal changes to your system.

My tank is setting up, so it'll have to cycle anyway. Maybe the small die off from the cured LR will give it a kick start. The tonga branch looks ace in the net pics I've seen.

Thankfully, hubster is handy, so we are going to attempt to build a skimmer. I'll post pics once it's (hopefully) functioning.
Joe's sailfin tang is kick-ass *awesome*. :blob3:

Perfect approach.....get your water temp, ph and salinity set. Put in your substrate and then get that rock. Let it cycle for at least a month with regular water changes, don't let that ammonia get off the charts. Add a few snails and hermits to get the cleanup crew in place. Then add some fish.....SLOWLY.

Why do water changes durring a cycle? You are just prolonging it. Leave it for 4 weeks, then start you regual w/c routine. JMO

It would be necessary to keep the ammonia levels at a manageable level. This off course relies heavily on if it is cured or not. IMO , if the rock is uncured you are going to have alot of die-off resulting in the subsewuent ammonia spike. I would like to see a lower spike to have less death of beneficial inhabitants in the rock, remember, it's not just rock you have there :) I am not talking huge water changes here, only changes that you deem necessary based on proper water testing and trying to keep water in acceptable parameters.

Once again IMO....

This is the best part of forums, evryone expresses an opinion and we get to hear it all and formulate that best plan of attack for each our own particular situations.

I understand your theorie. If the rock is uncured it most likely has been sitting in the sun somewhere in a wharehouse for 3 months, waiting to be shipped. Most of the stuff that we have in our tanks has at one point seen this grim day (ie- the hatian rock). If at this point you are worried about die off your are kind of late, as anything that is going to make it through, what has allready happend will make it throuh any amonia spike. I think after talking to some larger retailers you will find that things arent handled as well as we would like to think they are before it hits our local stores. If its cured rock the die off will be minimal and im not sure its even worth the effort to try and save some things. Like i said earler these are my experineces.

If you guys are going to cure uncured rock just remeber your going to have a sewage lagoon on your hands. I cured 50 lbs. and had to do major water changes just to try and keep the smell down. Did it in the basement, wife almost killed me. Never again, at least not in the house. Rock was from J&L. Most beautiful rook I've ever seen. After curing, looked like all the rest. Major die off.

I talked to Pat today and he said the price was going to be $10 an pound. Did the price go up or did he give a bulk deal to some of you? As I'm only after about 10-15 pounds.

CrazyFish
03-09-2005, 11:06 AM
THEKID I think you should fine someone esle who is buying rock and go in with him. I sure Pat's price is on bulk order. When I talked to him about getting live rock for a reasonable price, he said we would have to buy around 200lbs. I know there has been a few guys order some from Pat allready. I'm not sure the best way to handle this, maybe Pat could start a list at his store with club members names and amount of pounds per person. That way we would reach 200lb's and everyone would get the lower price know matter how much they want? just a thought.

Thankfully, hubster is handy, so we are going to attempt to build a skimmer.

I don't know if this is of interest to you or not, but under the DIY section of Canreef, there is a guy (BMW) who built a kick-butt beckett style skimmer. Lots of pic's and directions. I think Joey Bee mentioned once the beckett injector can be purchased locally at Waterboy, its actually designed for pond fountains. The picture of the one BMW used looks identical to the one used in Reef Concept Areofoamers and it was a left over from his pond days.
