Do you have invert's or coral?

Its just going to be a constant struggle. 55g is too small for a powder blue tang, simple as that. Amoung other things, its stressed from not enough room. Id go with the copper and feeding of garlic in a hospital tank of coarse of say 20-30g.

"This is a wide-ranging, fast-swimming vigorous fish that needs plenty of room. The smallest tank I recommend for their keeping is one hundred gallons."

Best thing to do is keep the fish stress down, get yourself a GOOD UV sterilizer and run it 24-7, do not remove the fish, this will only stress it out. Ovoid sticking your hand in the tank, cleaning the glass, and constantly trying to look really close at the fish, all this just causes stress. The first wave of ich will not harm the fish, and as long as you start running a UV right away the ich will not return for a second wave, it's the second wave that usually kills the fish as the first wave just causes the fish to loose its natural slime coating.

I think people over react with ich, it's completely natural and is actually good for the fish if controlled. It can also be beneficial to have you fish get a little ich once in a while as they will build up a better immunity and have a better chance if a large outbreak occurred. I’ve had many fish get ich and the only time I lost a fish due to ich was when I tried to quarantine the fish, if you going to quarantine you should have done it before introducing the fish in the show tank.

Good UV’s are Lifeguards 25watt +, also the Laguna pond UV’s work just as good and usually cost a little less. Those submersible power compact style UV’s do not work very well and will not help this problem.

Also I do not find copper products to be anywhere near as effective and wouldn't recommend them, however since you asked fresh A.carbon will remove the majority of the copper treatment.

A powder blue in a 55 is really pushing it. Now that it is in your tank (ich) your options are limited. Some have had luck with Kick ich or similar type meds. IMO the fish should be taken out and treated outside of the tank. Copper in your show tank will render it useless if you ever want keep inverts etc. It will attach to everything in your tank. Powder Blues are major ich magnets. If you remove it now you might get lucky and save your other fish. Best of luck.

I agree with every the others, tank is to small for the powder and the yellow IMO. but best cure for ich is not chemicals. if the fish is eating well thats good, give it lots of good food, get some cleaner shrimp they do wonders, or neon gobies if you can are great cleaner and not like cleaner wrasse can live off other foods. Invest in uv steralizer, this will help prevent out breaks down the road and protect your other fish from an eruption of free swimming ich. chemicals will only add stress to your fish and system and mess with any biological filtration. The only product i have heard good results on but have not seen for my self is no more sick fish. http://mandarinaquatics.com/medications_ick.html
I dont know the accual site but i read about it here

Mcnasty I sorry I have to disagree on a few things about ick..

Chemicals are will in fact work alot better then just feeding.
Copper will work amazing on fish in a QT tank not your display tank...

If copper gets into your tank the rock, sand ,all inverts ,snails, corals will all be lost..
Now don't get me wrong I feed my fish Selcon, and garlic Selcon 3 times a week garlic 1 per month to hel owith Ick and the immune system it helps with keeping it strong..

Cleaner will not render ick it away. Sorry Ick comes from many unstable Organisms in the water.
1.Ick are small pores tha atach to the fish working from the outside to the inside. messing with there organs. but we knew that .. the ick is usually passed alot from Tang Powder blues ,angels, butterflies. Etc.

there are some ways to get rid of ick the few that i know of is
Hiposalinity taking the salt down t 1.090 but this is done over a course of 2 weeks around that.

then there is the fishless trick at all fish out of the tank and run for 3-4 weeks with nothing in there the ick spores will drop and die.

the 3rd way is not halfingthe ICK in your tank QT tank the biggest way to get rid of it is not to have it..QT it.....

I have tried the green X, very powerful stuff.
Garlic the gel caps I use 1500Mg mix it up with flakes and the fish go crazy.
there is reading about GINGER. But I have nt tried that, UV ,but big UV I hve a 36 W Uv unit on y 170 gal tank.. I think its killing ick But i dont know . HTH
