Hey everyone. I just set up my tank and only have one Rio 2500HP powerhead in it for water movement. I hate that powerhead and want to get it out of my tank. So I suppose I'm looking for oppinions on how to create enough water movement in my tank.
It's a 65G rectangle tank 4 feet and roughly 20"H X 18"D ( I forget exact measurements right now).
I was thinking about trying to make a closed loop system with one of those SCWD wavemakers in it. I'm just unsure of how large of a pump I would need for this.
Some one also recomended that I just use two of those Rio Seio 820 and point them so they fire at an angle towards the front center of the glass.
Any opinions on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Is your tank drilled? Do you have a sump? Do you have an HOB overfow system? Provide some of the more experienced reefers here with a little more info and you will be well on your way to a solution.
Also, the biggest question should be how much do you want to spend?

Right.
None of that stuff...yet.
All I have is a regular tank with that Rio 2500 powerhead and an old CPR Bak Pak 2 and a new AquaC Remora with a Maxijet 1200 on it.
My plan is to take off the CPR when the AquaC is broken in.
In the future I would like to put a sump under it but my stand may not accomodate that large of a sump. :icon_sad:
I have roughly 65lbs of live rock. Maybe more or less I've never weighed it. A friend gave it to me. Oh and 90lbs of sugar sand.

The cost is always a factor isn't it. I can't afford high end parts so middle of the road as far as cost goes.
Best bang for my buck how about that.

Being that you don't have a sump I think the closed loop is a good idea, you won't have to worry about siphoning etc. I would say that with a SQWD you would want maybe a Mag 9 pump, not much smaller. I have read that they will run on just about any pump but it will be slower (SQWD). Mags are descent pumps for the money and used by many people. You could spend hundreds on a pump if you want. At least you would get rid of the powerheads as they can be a PITA.

I find homedepot is cheaper and has a better selection for the things i have needed in the past.

none of the big box stores can come close to comparing to waterboy in reguard to selection.ive spent many an hour and gas running from home depot to coop to rona to... trying to find the right parts.waterboy carries the most complete lines in sizes up to 2" bar none!!!! big boxers have the basics.you can get bulkheads, flow valves, check valves, all fittings, pipe.for a few bucks more in cost it will save you time and gas in the end.if they dont have it in stock they have got it for me within hrs. this is only my opinion but if you were to compare selection, cost, service etc it is obvious.do it right the first time without sacrificing, remember every extra corner ,reducer ,coupling etc affects flow rates.its a really pain to redo the plumbing because you cheaped out on proper fittings.i know!

hey Paul go with a mak 4 pump it is an in line pump it is inexpensive at around 125 bucks and will pump about 1100 gph. The mag pumps r garbage and they lose a lot of their ooph as soon as they have to take a corner or go over any distance.
