Does anyone want to go in with me on a live order from ocean aquatics. I know an order just went in but i didnt get in on it and now im having a major hair algae problem and i cant find any snails other then turbo here in the city. It would be a live order and shipping would be split by the bag not per person. 20 bags ordered shipping is $20 each bag is $1 kinda thing. I know shipping wont be that cheap just using it as an example. If anyone would like to do this please let me know. Thanks.
Izzie

Actually Turbo Snails are the ones you want for hair algea. They mow that stuff down like heroin addicts looking for a fix!

i've been reading... and it says a hermit will take a snails shell away!... is this true? what if i leave empty shells around the floor for the hermit to leave and go to a new one?... i was thinking of buying 5 of each for 80 gallon for now... and buy more if i need more

Ya I considered combining snails and hermits when I first started my tank and am glad I didnt.

Hermits are looking for the best house available. Just like crack addicts are looking for the best rock!

I only have Turbo snails and have had no issue. Putting some empty shells down for hermies (not hermaphrodites) to pick and choose from may help keep the snails around longer.

Some don't care if the crabs eat the snails. Snails are cheap, unlike crack.

my 3 hermits killed 20 turbos and i had lots of spare shells for the crabs

... jason, what would you reccomend, just snails too or what?? i like hermit crab... and not so much snails... but i guess snails will do a better all around job, is there anything that will clean the glass that can live with crab?

I realize you asked Jason, but the hermits won't chow down on your hair algae.

The turbos will.

... yea i don't mind that you answer... but will a wrasse or goby or something clean glass???... and i thought that the hermits will cut the "grass"... do turbos overpopulate themselves?? inbred bastards??? and also... i have a sebae, perc, skunk, chromis, damsel and will be buying a peppermint shrimp?? should i not buy a shrimp??? as he'll eat the snails too? would the shrimp attack the hermits??... what about sea stars for algae? no? too slow hey!

I don't think a wrasse or goby will take care of algae for ya.

Lawnmower Blennies will eat hair algae off of the glass and rocks and they have cool attitudes. Not to mention they have FUNKY antenaes above their eyes. SWEET! But not even close to the amount that 5 Turbos will eat.

I have two cleaner shrimps and they leave my snails and anenome alone and I think the same would go for a pepermint shrimp.

Sea Stars are something I personally wouldn't bother with. Another critter that people claim takes a huge bite out of hair algae is a Sea Hare (hair?) but I think that if they die you need to get them out of your tank ASAP or they will BIO NUKE your tank.

Sea urchin will go after hair algea and hermits will also eat hair algea. never saw any of my lawn mower blennies eat hair algea.

I hate having crabs!!!lol seriously most crabs will kill a snail just to try the shell. Most snails tip and then the crab gets them. Most hermits do not use smaller turbo, margarita, astrea shells they prefer baby conch,or nassarios and cerith snails.I prefer to go strictly snails as ive never seen the same benefit in crabs as you will see with a mixture of nassarious, turbos, astreas, margaritas etc.and 1 crab can wipe out your entire snails. My larger turbos mow!!! . but they can also starve.so dont get to many turbos maybe 1 per 20 gal depending on if they are deepwater turbos(HUGE)(I think the huge are the deepwater but may be the smaller ones).Get lots of astrea and margaritas, cerith and some nassarious for your sand.Add lots I have 4 Huge turbos,16 turbos, 27 margaritas, 14 cerith, 17 astreas, 12 nassarias in my 70gal would like more. I have no algea where the snails roam only in my overflow boxes and i give each big turbo a week in there and its see through again.Bad thing is these large snails have got into overflow tubes causing floods so now i mostly use the smaller turbos and margaritas in there but they plugged it too by climbing on each other causing the waterflow to decrease.I think its cool when you look in the tank and you can count and see many snails on the glass, rocks, everywhere. Most of my snails are older than 2yrs and growing.Remember lots of snails will use calcium so check it and add or they may not grow .This is just my opinion based on my experiences.

I'm on the same wave length as you Shawn. And I do agree that hermits attach the ceriths first, probably because they are usually on the sandbed. I am in the process of eliminating the blue-legs from my system.

Margarita's are not a tropical snail and basically cook to death over time. Max temp. 72 degrees. One thing About crabs is if anything dies in my tank it's eaten in no time. I'll put up with the odd snail getting eaten. I do have lots off empty shells so maybe my crabs don't go after the snails as much.

i never heard that about Margaritas but i have been lucky, mine have been fine at 80 for over 2 years and i rarely loose one. Most have over doubled in size. I think i got a good batch cause most are alive. As far as crabs to eat left overs and rotting corpses yes they will but i preffer shrimp for that as they are less likely to attack my snails, clams,or sponges as most crabs do and i just feel one shrimp will eat more than many crabs and faster too. Also i have 4 shrimp so they get it all .I also find having a 2 spawning cleaners and 2 blood shrimp is beneficial to my fish also .My peeve with snails is they tip my corals desperately seeking some algea or food ,they are ugly and not realy colorful but hey i should mention i do have a couple crabs through out my system-2yr with me electril blue zebra hermit(ate and maimed many snails)hes been in my crab doungen of a sump for a year.I also have 2 unnamed red hermits in my main tank that i never see and they have had the same shells since 1999 ! I have never witnessed them harrassing a snail even when tipped and rarely lose a snail so i would say i know my crabs cause ive had them a long time.lol.They are the few good ones so to say all hermit crabs are evil would be wrong.Just my opinion

Snails are cheap unless you buy them in regina,,,,lol

My opinion. Snails and no crabs. I've had bad luck but do what you want. I should mention the only crabs I had were blue hermits.

Ask Paul about turbos they are Great.I told him this story:" I bought 3 when I first started salt and I had hair algae that would grow inches a day. When I woke up the next day half my tank was clean like it was mowed."

The only problem some say with turbos is they get big and can knock stuff over. No big deal take them out if and when it happens. I have never had my turbos produce more so no problems in my tank. I also have a variety of snails as they all seem to like certain things better than others. Shrimp are awesome too!

Ya I do have troubles with my Turbos knocking over my corals. But once I have my rock the way I like it I will likely put a small dab of crazy glue on the bottom of my corals rock and glue it to the live rock.

That way the turbos won't knock over the little corals.
